Key developments and challenges for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in the period 2017-9/2023

This study analyzes the behavior of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) between 2017 and September 2023. The objective is to assess the main progress and challenges shown by the Organization during the period. On the one hand, the results indicate progress in cooperation in the fields of security and socio-economic relations, as well as in the SCO's relations with international organizations. On the other hand, the expansion of the number of members and relations with regional multilateral schemes are presented as challenges. In such a complex global context, it is necessary for the regional mechanism and the schemes that are articulated around it to function properly. In this regard, it underlines the need to speed up the process of joining new members and to implement a formal mechanism for resolving disputes and thus advance in the conclusion of bilateral and multilateral agreements among members. Likewise, relations with regional multilateral schemes should be strengthened jointly, all of which are crucial aspects for the stability and success of the SCO in the medium and long term.
